harissa silan salmon

Harissa Silan (Date Syrup) Salmon

I’ve been on a major harissa kick for the last couple of weeks and have been using it for roasted veggies, pasta sauces, and marinades for all types of proteins.

I threw together the most delicious sweet, spicy and tangy salmon marinade using harissa, date syrup (also known as silan), and a few simple spices.

harissa date syrup salmon

Harissa is a Tunisian hot chili pepper paste that can be used for various recipes. You can buy a mild or spicy variety depending on where you shop, and use it in marinades for your fish, tofu or even vegetables.

While I normally sweeten my sauces with a little honey or maple syrup, I decided to sweeten this recipe with some date syrup I had in my pantry, also known as silan.

The sweet and spicy combination works so well with a salmon fillet. The oranges on top add a delicious zest, and also make this dish such a crowd pleaser.

What you’ll need to make harissa date syrup salmon

  • Salmon fillet, anywhere from 1.5-2 lbs of salmon
  • Spices such as paprika, salt and pepper
  • Harissa– choose milld or spicy, depending on your preference
  • Date syrup, or substitute honey or maple syrup
  • Orange slices
  • Olive oil
  • Garlic
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

You can marinate the salmon up to 4 hours in advance, then garnish it with the oranges and bake it before you’re ready to serve.

This recipe is truly so simple to make, and a delicious way to elevate your weeknight dinners. I can’t wait for you all to try it!

What to serve with your harissa silan salmon:

Ingredients

  • 1.5 -2 lbs salmon
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Harissa Silan Marinade

  • 2 tbsp harissa (Tunisian hot chili pepper paste)
  • 2 tbsp silan aka date syrup, or substitute honey
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 an orange, thinly sliced
  • Fresh parsley, to top
  • Fresh lemon juice, to top

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F
  2. Place the salmon fillet on a parchment lined baking sheet and season with the paprika, salt and pepper. Rub the spices into the salmon.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, harissa, date syrup, garlic and salt. Mix together to form a sauce
  4. Pour the marinade over the salmon and brush it over the top to evenly spread it. You can save some sauce to drizzle over the top after baking. If you wanted to prepare this ahead of time, you can leave the salmon marinating in the harissa date sauce in the fridge for a few hours.
  5. When ready to bake, layer the orange slices over the top of the salmon. Lightly drizzle with olive oil
  6. Bake the salmon for about 18-22 minutes, then broil for 2 minutes. Baking time may vary depending on size and thickness of the salmon.
  7. Once ready, top with any extra sauce, freshly chopped parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice
